Why do people lose weight when they go vegan?


While there are many benefits of going vegan, the one that gets the most attention is weight loss. You hear it all the time: I went vegan and I lost weight. But, why are so many people who go vegan losing weight?

There can be a myriad of reasons why people lose weight. Of course, it’s no secret that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables are sure to melt the fat away. However, there are some major factors that can contribute to the success of weight loss. Many vegans and new vegans also eliminate the need for processed and junk foods. So, instead of eliminating meat, they are also eliminating the consumption of:

  • Trans Fats- It’s no secret that Tran’s fats are found in a myriad of foods and they are no good for anyone. They have been linked to heart disease and a plethora of other chronic diseases.

  • Vegetable Oils – Has been known to increase inflammation and cause oxidative damage.

  • Refined Sugars- It’s no secret that refined sugars are linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and a myriad of other chronic illnesses.

  • Refined Grains- This can lead to many spikes in blood sugar, which increases risk of diabetes, weight gain and insulin resistance.

It’s no secret if you eliminate all those “deadly: ingredients that are known to increase obesity, high blood pressure, and increases risk of the disease, you will naturally lose weight and improve your overall health.

It’s important to note that going vegan is much more than just eliminating meat. It’s about living a healthy lifestyle. There are some vegans that are overweight. This can be due to the food industry marketing healthy “vegan” snacks, which may be processed and have hidden sugars. That’s why it’s important to eat all natural and organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

If you are going vegan to lose weight, you must still exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. When you go vegan, you will realize that it’s much more than losing weight. You will be prolonging your life, reducing your risk of disease, and saving the planet, weight loss is just a great side effect.
